Background:
I am an assistant professor and co-director of the Geriatric Nursing Leadership (GNL) Program (a specialty option in the RN to BS program) at the College of Nursing. I graduated from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN with a BS in nursing, the University of Utah College of Nursing with a master's degree in Nursing (Gerontological Nurse Practitioner) and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies.
I am certified as a gerontological nurse practitioner and an advanced practice palliative care nurse. I also am a member of the University's interdisciplinary Center on Aging and serve on the editorial boards for the International Journal of Palliative Nursing and Journal of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy. Recently, I was invited to join the national faculty for the Geriatric End-of-Life Nursing Education (ELNEC).
Before joining the faculty at the College of Nursing in 2001, I oversaw the collaboration between the University of Wisconsin and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) which produced the JCAHO pain assessment and management standards. I also assisted with national pain management organizational change programs in home health programs and other small organizations.
Research Program/Scholarly Activity:
My areas of research and scholarship center around end-of-life care for vulnerable and under served persons, including nursing home and assisted living residents. I am completing a study on the prevalence of pain in assisted living residents. I am also a member of the research team developing a tool to measure quality of nursing care related to pain management.
