  • Background:

William N Dudley, PhD, is an experimental psychologist with an extensive background in nursing and public health research. Prior to earning his doctoral degree, he served as Applied Statistician at the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing in Augusta Georgia. Upon completion of his doctoral degree, he assumed the position of Co-Director of the Rural Health Outreach Program which was funded at the MCG College of Nursing by the Kellogg foundation to promote maternal and infant health in rural Georgia. In 1995 he accepted the position of applied statistician at the Nell Hodgson School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta. Immediately before coming to the University of Utah College of Nursing, Dr Dudley was a Research Assistant Professor at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Currently Dr Dudley is a Professor in the school of Nursing where he directs the Center for Applied Statistics, teaches at the doctoral level, and serves as a statistical colleague on several externally funded studies.

    Research Program/ Scholarly Activity:

Dr Dudley's major research focus over the past ten years has been to work as a statistical colleague on numerous federally and privately funded grants. These grants have studied a variety of nursing and public health topics such as: Adaptation to living with Internal Cardioverter Defribulators, Oral Mucositis pain in high dose chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS prevention in adolescents, and Nutrition and Exercise in African Americans. At the University of Utah College of Nursing, he is providing statistical consultation on studies of cancer symptoms including fatigue, pain, and neutropenia. In addition, he is working with studies that are investigating the psychosocial effects of genetic counseling in kindreds at high risk for colon and breast cancer. His research experience includes studies that have been conducted within a variety of settings including: psychology labs; community based organizations; prisons; hospital clinics; and through mailed out surveys. He is particularly interested in multivariate statistical techniques that can be used analyze data collected in randomized cluster designs and to study the correlates of how patients' symptoms change over time.

Dr Dudley draws heavily on his research experience to provide the students with concrete examples of how behavioral research is conceptualized, proposed, implemented, and reported in peer reviewed journals. The main aspects of research design are brought to life in a semester long project in which students develop the research methods section for one or more NIH RFA of their choosing.
