Baccalaureate Admission Requirements

Applications are accepted once a year for Fall Semester Admission.

Individuals wishing to earn a baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing must apply directly to the College of Nursing as well as to the University of Utah's Admission Office. If you are currently enrolled and are a matriculated University of Utah student reapplying is not necessary. (Admission to the University of Utah does not constitute admission to the College of Nursing).

Individuals preparing for admission to the college are encouraged to attend a College of Nursing Information Session. Individual appointments will not be made unless a student has attended one of these information sessions (exceptions may be made for out-of-town students and students whose work schedule conflicts with information session dates and times). Students generally apply to the College of Nursing during their second year of university study.

1. Completed University of Utah Admission application if not currently enrolled at the University of Utah. http://www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/index.htm



2. Completed College of Nursing application.



3. Completion of at least 45 semester hours of study.



4. Completion of the nine (9) nursing prerequisite courses prior to entering the program. The six (6) nursing prerequisite marked by (*) must be completed and graded at the time of application. It is your responsibility to submit updated information, i.e., grades, to ensure completion of information and subsequent review of your application. Human Anatomy and Human Physiology must be completed within 7 years of starting the program. These courses must also be taught in the English language.
   
   Fall 2008 Applicants: Must repeat Anatomy and Physiology before beginning nursing program unless petition to the 7 year time limit policy is submitted and approved. The repeat is not required to be complete before submitting application.

5. Completion of general education requirements prior to entering the program.
   
   
6. Completion of all prerequisite courses with a Grade of C or better. (The above link provides a list of course equivalences - support courses from colleges through out Utah).



7. Minimum grade point average (GPA) on all prerequisites:3.0 on a 4.0 scale



8. Minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.



9. Official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended must be sent to the College of Nursing.



10. Three professional references.



11. Written essay on a subject chosen by the College of Nursing (topic becomes available approximately three months prior to application deadline.)



12. A professional resume.



13. A personal interview and completion of the Nursing Aptitude Assessment may be required as a portion of the admission process.



14. Applicants for whom English is a second language must score 50 or higher on the "Test of Spoken English."

Students are responsible for the completion of their application file. Incomplete files will not be reviewed. A completed file includes (1) completed application forms - University of Utah and College of Nursing, (2) three references, (3) current transcripts, (4) resume, (5) essay, and (6) any other information requested by the review committee.

Applicants are carefully reviewed by the Baccalaureate Admissions and Advancement Committee on the basis of academic qualifications as well as promise for success in the program and potential for contributions to the profession. The College of Nursing adheres to the University of Utah's policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity in admission decisions. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the resources of the college, students are accepted on the basis of the recommendations of the Baccalaureate Admissions and Advancement Committee and the Dean of the college.

Final acceptance is contingent on receipt of official transcripts and the successful completion of required prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher. If the applicant does not enroll as a student and enter the College of Nursing the first day of classes for the semester admitted, the enrollment fee and the position in the entering class will be forfeited.

Students who are denied admission are responsible for completing and submitting a new application each admission cycle. Applications will not be forwarded. Applications from individuals who have applied in the past are given no special consideration and are reviewed as a member of the current applicant pool. Individuals who reapply must be currently admitted to the University of Utah.

A physical examination, documentation of current immunization (including hepatitis B vaccine series and second MMR booster), TB test, and proof of cardiopulmonary resuscitation/basic life support (CPR/BLS) certification are required after admission to the college and prior to enrollment in any course with a clinical component. Students will not be allowed to progress into any clinical activities without providing written documentation of current appropriate immunizations, current TB test, drug test and CPR/BLS certification. Please make sure that you retain a copy of these documents for your own personal records and professional requests.
