Distance Learning Rural and Underserved Primary Care and Addictions Master's Program Admission Information

Applicants to the Master's program in nursing must be graduates of a program accredited by a nationally-recognized accrediting agency in nursing with an upper division major in nursing. In addition, the undergraduate program must have included field Practice in community/public health and psychiatric- mental health nursing.

Completed applications for the Master of Science program will be reviewed beginning July 1st for the following program year.

Admission to the University of Utah is consistent with policy of the Graduate School. Students must be admitted to both the Graduate School of the university and the College of Nursing. Application to the University Graduate School should be completed no later than two (2) months prior to College of Nursing deadlines

Admission to the Master's program is limited and selective. Admission cannot be guaranteed for all individuals meeting criteria for admission. All applicants must have practiced as a registered nurse for a minimum of one year full time equivalent prior to application for the program. Applicants to the outreach master's program must indicate their desired program of choice. Applications to the College of Nursing are available on our website, www.nurs.utah.edu, approximately four (4) months prior to the application deadline. Application requirements are:

1. Completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
2. Completed University of Utah application to graduate school.
3. Completed College of Nursing application form.
4. Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
• NOT required for applicants with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher
• REQUIRED for applicants with a cumulative GPA of 3.19 or lower; score cannot be in excess of five (5) years old
5. Official transcripts from ALL previous institutions of higher education attended must be sent to the College of Nursing.
6. Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
7. Statement of professional goals.
8. Three (3) professional references.
9. Current copy of resume/vita.
10. Verification of licensure as a registered nurse in at least one of the United States.
11. Satisfactory completion of an elementary statistics course (C grade or better) within the past five (5) years.
12. Some MS specialty areas may require an upper division Physiology course within the past five (5) years.
13. A personal interview may be required.
14. Applicants for whom English is a second language must score 50 or higher on the "Test of Spoken English."
15. The following Nurse Praxtitioner Programs require a minimum of one year, with preference for more, professional post licensure work experience
• Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
• Gerontological/Adult Nurse Practitioner (GNP/ANP)
• Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP)

Students are responsible for the completion of their application file. Incomplete files will not be reviewed.

Proof of hepatitis B vaccine series, second MMR booster and a report of medical history are required after acceptance into the program.

International Applicants

In addition to the requirements listed above, international applicants must:

• File an International Student Application for Admission obtained from the International Admissions Office, 250 Student Services Building, (801) 581-3091.
• Pass both the Test of Spoken English (TSE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if English is a second language. TSE score must be 50 or higher. TOEFL score must be 500 (173 computer score) or higher.
• Provide evidence of certification by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.
