RN - BS Online Program

Requirements Program of Study Application Programs Home Prerequisites FAQ

RN - BS Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When does the program start and how long does it take to complete?
The RN to BS program begins each Fall semester and is completed in four (4) consecutive semesters; finishing at the end of the following Fall semester.
  2. How much will the program cost?
The overall cost will vary depending on tuition rate changes, books, and fees. The current tuition rates can be found at http://www.acs.utah.edu/tuition/ia-tuit.html Refer to the "upper division: junior and senior" undergraduate tuition rates to determine tuition costs. Text book costs average $100/semester. A one-time distance education delivery fee of $200.00 is also applicable to all students participating in fully online programs at the U.
  3. Is the RN to BS program full-time or part-time?
The RN to BS program is specifically designed for the working nurse. It is a part-time, online program that can be completed in just 16 months. The program of study can be accessed at http://www.nurs.utah.edu/programs/rnbs/courses.htm. Note that this is a lock-step program, meaning you follow the program of study as outlined.
  4. Is there a time limit on the nursing prerequisite courses?
The RN to BS program does not have a time limit on any prerequisite course. However; we highly recommend retaking Human Anatomy and Human Physiology if they are over seven (7) years old. Anatomy and Physiology must be taken in English and will need to be retaken regardless of age if they were completed in a different language.
  5. Since the program is online, can I go at my own pace?
Courses are semester based. Discussions, tests, assignments, etc. are expected to be complete by certain times throughout the semester. Our courses follow the dates outlined in the University of Utah academic calendar (http://www.sa.utah.edu/regist/pages/Deadlines.html).
  6. I have a family and work full-time. Is it possible to complete the program and still fulfill other responsibilities and obligations?
Most students in the RN to BS program are working full-time while juggling numerous other responsibilities. The online course format allows students to access courses at their convenience and still stay current with assignments. As with all college courses, you can estimate putting in 3 hours/credit hour allocated. (i.e.: 3 credit hour course - average of 8 -10 hours/week of coursework) Clinical placements do not begin until the 3rd semester. Instructors work closely with students to ensure compatibility between work and clinical schedules.
  7. What do I need to know before taking an online course?
The majority of RN to BS students own their own computers. They find this extremely helpful as they aren't restricted to the hours of operation at the library, etc. Knowledge of internet navigation and basic computer skills are a must. Time management skills and self-discipline will play key roles in your success - remember you won't have an instructor to remind you every time you go to class what is due when - you don't attend class!!! Check WebCT often - at least 2-3 a week.
  8. When is the application deadline?
The application deadline for the College of Nursing is February 15th every year for the Fall. The application is online and available in August or September. Applicants must also apply to the University of Utah (U) if they are not current students at the U. Applications deadlines for the U can be found at http://www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/. **** Remember you must submit copies of your transcripts to both the College of Nursing and University of Utah.****
  9. Do I have to have all the prerequisite courses complete and graded at the time of application?
No, all of the prerequisites don't have to be complete at the time you apply; but they must be complete before beginning the RN-BS program in the Fall.
  10. Who can help me if I have a question about general education requirements and/or transferring courses from other schools?
The University College, or Transfer Center, can answer any and all questions related to transferring courses and general education requirements. Their contact information can be found at http://www.sa.utah.edu/advise/. Questions regarding the nursing program and/or prerequisites should be directed to the College of Nursing.
  11. How often am I required to be on campus?
Students are required to attend a two-day on-campus intensive orientation at the beginning of the program.
  12. When do clinical courses begin?
There are two clinical courses in the third and fourth semesters of the program.
    a. Community Health is in the summer (3rd semester) and requires 45 hours of clinical time.
    b. Capstone/Integrated Nursing Practice is in the final (4th) semester and requires 120 hours of clinical time.
Every effort is made to locate a clinical site close to your place of residence.
  13. What are the ATI exams?

There are multiple exams covering four topic areas: Adult Medical-Surgical, Nursing Care of Children, Maternal-Newborn, and Mental Health Nursing. The cost of exams is about $400.
  14. What courses will I be taking in the program?
