University of Utah College of Nursing Celebrates 30 Years of Nursing Excellence

Dean Maureen Keefe will speak at the 30th Anniversary celebration of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International’s Gamma Rho Chapter at the spring induction ceremony on April 10th, 2008 at Hotel Monaco in Salt Lake City.

Gamma Rho Chapter History

On April 26, 1978 Sigma Theta Tau officially recognized the Gamma Rho chapter. Maureen Niland, the national treasurer installed the officers and officiated the proceedings. This celebration was the beginning of the University of Utah's chapter in the National Honor Society of Nursing. Fifteen members transferred from other chapters and seventy-eight (78) new members were inducted. The membership reads like Who's Who of Utah nursing.

The Dean of the College of Nursing, Madeline Leninger offered comments as well as the first chapter president, Joan Uhl. Sister Francelyn Reeder, Vice President of Gamma Rho gave the closing remarks. Other chapter officers were Margaret Adamson, Secretary, Liz Close was the treasurer, and Kay Carbol was the archivist. Advisors were Elizabeth Moses and Kathy McCance Nelson. Darlene Peay had responsibility of program committee chair and Virginia Cole was Bylaws Committee Chair. Jayne Furness chaired the Membership and Eligibility Committee and Maxine Harwood had the task of publicity and newsletter committee chair.

The nurses that founded the Gamma Rho chapter were true leaders in every sense of the word.
